Your Brand Guide Isn't Just for Designers Anymore. It's Your AI Strategy.

Awhile back I was deep in a content sprint, jumping between ten open documents, trying to pull together campaign assets across multiple channels, editing for voice consistency, checking proof points, and making sure everything we were putting out was on brand. It was messy.

It takes time and lots of "re-checking". And that was on me. I was the bottleneck.

Sound familiar?

Here's the thing about marketing with a small but mighty team: we are moving fast across a lot of lanes at once. Integrated campaigns, social, PowerShift our industry magazine, With Great Power our podcast, demand generation, sales enablement, events... the list doesn't stop. Not to mention PowerShift and With Great Power have different brand standards, voice and audience. Every marketing channel has a different audience, a different tone, a different format. But it all has to come from the same common ground and flow together across every single touchpoint.

When AI tools started becoming a real part of my workflow, my first instinct was to just start using them. And I did. I was chatting with several platforms, learning and asking questions, iterating on content, building things out. It was helpful. But every time I handed something to the team or tried to scale what I was doing, it got messy. The outputs sometimes drifted off brand. The voice wasn't consistent or info wasn't flowing through correctly to briefs. And the user interface of what I had built was clunky. And honestly? I was still doing all the quality checking anyway because I wasn't trusting the process yet.

I had automated some of the work but not the standard.

That's when I reached out to an engineer and he uttered two words: Claude skills.

That conversation sent me back to the drawing board entirely. I won't pretend it wasn't humbling. I had built something I couldn't continue to iterate because I'm not an engineer and don't know coding. But starting over taught me more than the first attempt ever could. And now I'm building something that can actually learn and grow with the team instead of just working for me in isolation and AI deciding what the brand's next steps are. (Scary!)

Here's what I'm working toward at a high level: a group agent built on Claude that gives our entire marketing team a shared, structured starting point for content creation and repurposing. Brand voice, personas, approved proof points, content standards, channel nuances, all in one place. And a QA checker that reviews outputs against our actual brand guidelines before anything moves forward. (And don't get me twisted... I will always advocate for original content and the human eye, but AI can help take your original content and scale it faster within the strict parameters you choose.)

The goal isn't to replace anyone's creativity or judgment. The goal is efficiency and speed without compromising the value and integrity of our brand. Instead of jumping between ten documents to review and give feedback, the team has a single source of truth to work from. We give it our original content and clear action items around output alongside the skills we've built. When we want to update or retire a proof point, for example, we update the skill in one place and everyone benefits. The brand stays consistent whether we are writing a PowerShift feature, long form content, a LinkedIn post, or an email.

Not someday. Now. That's the future I'm building toward on a Wednesday.

And here's the broader point I want to say:

Your brand guide is not just a PDF you send to a new vendor. It is your AI strategy.

The brands that are using AI most effectively are not the ones with the biggest budgets or the most technical resources. They are the ones with clear, documented, enforced brand standards that can be fed into AI tools as the foundation for every output.

Brand voice. Visual identity. Registered trademarks. Approved messaging. Audience personas. Content standards by channel. If you have these things documented and up to date, you are already ahead of a lot of the market, especially in the small to mid-size business space where most teams are still testing the waters and figuring out where AI fits.

If you don't have them... that is your first step. Not the AI tool. The foundation.

Because garbage in, garbage out. We already know that. But the flip side is also true: strong foundation in, consistent and scalable brand out.

I'm still building. I'm still learning. And I'm doing it as someone who figured out she was the bottleneck and decided to do something about it.

If you're working on something similar, or trying to figure out where to start, I'd love to compare notes. Drop a comment or message me on LinkedIn. We are all figuring this out in real time and the more we share what's working, the better we all get.
